prouvé coupe papier letter opener Designed by Jean Prouvé, 1938
The Coupe Papier, or paper knife, is one of Prouvé's rare small
objects and in terms of shape unusual for his work. The design references
elements of surrealist paintings of the era and its organic form is
reminiscent of the seat shell on Charles and Ray Eames' "La
Chaise", which did not appear until ten years later. Commissioned by
Prouvé the paper knife was a limited edition made of polished stainless
steel and served as a gift for architects and business friends.
