Around 1950 the United States was characterized by a firm belief in progress accompanied by a lasting economic boom. Anything seemed possible and everybody wanted to be modern. With a view to bringing modern design right into the American home, George Nelson designed a range of products offering a new and unconventional interpretation of such everyday items as lamps, wall clocks, desk clocks and other domestic accessories. And right into the 1970s Nelson's New York design studio continued to produce a multitude of designs such as the "Bubble Lamp" and the "Watermelon Desk Clock", items which have now become icons of mid-century design.

George Nelson's desk clocks typify the spirit of the early 1950s and, at the dawn of a new century, are still a refreshing alternative to more traditional timepieces. The models selected by the Vitra Design Museum were designed between 1948 and 1954 and some of them continued to be manufactured until the mid-1970s. These re-editions mirror the original design so beloved of collectors right down to the smallest detail. Not only the dimensions of the clock's housing and its hands but also the way it has been constructed, finish and color are true to Nelson's original designs.
