milá tmm floor lamp Designed by Miguel Milá, 1961
The most celebrated piece by one of the masters of Spanish design, the TMM
is an exquisite demonstration of formal serenity and functional
efficiency. A base in the form of a cross supports the square shaft and
the drum-shaped height adjustable shade.
The TMM lamp is a classic design, an object that will last forever. Created
by Miguel Milá in 1961 it received the ADI FAD Critics Prize in 1962 and
has been reissued by Santa & Cole since 1988.
The drum-shaped shade moves over a vertical axis, and hides the light
source. The shade projects the light downward, for reading or working, or
upwards for general effect. The shaft has two sections, the lower half is
square and connected to the cross-shaped foot, and the upper half is
cylindrical to allow the shade to move freely. The height of the shade can
be adjusted by means of a rubber slide. There is no switch: the lamp is
turned on and off with a gentle flick of a black cotton cord.
After a long career of more than forty years, the TMM is as fresh as ever.
Turning the lamp on and off by flicking the cord and raising or lowering
the shade as needed has become a daily habit, and the lamp itself has
become a companionable object, so much so that, as the designer Gabriel
Teixidó says, "If I ever find myself without a TMM, I will have to
rush out and buy another".
Max. 100 watt bulb.
The lighter colored beech finish lamp is shown only to illustrate the form
of the lamp, currently the TMM lamp is only available in wenge finish.
