nelson™ coconut chair Designed by George Nelson
Seeing this unusual chair, it's easy to imagine George Nelson in the
kitchen of his New York City apartment removing the husk of a coconut,
cracking the hard inner shell open with a mallet, and examining a fragment
of kernel to admire its curve. The scene is typical of a man who used
everything he saw to shape his architecture, graphic and furniture design.
Little wonder, then, that challenged with giving "lounge seating
comfort together with great freedom of movement" he drew upon a
simple object to make such a dramatic statement.
The chair's shallow sides and inviting curves encourage sitting every
which way. Its thick, upholstered one-piece foam rubber cushion snaps over
a molded plastic shell, updated from the original sheet-steel shell, that
sits on bright chrome legs. Nelson noted in a 1956 catalog, the Coconut
"has a strong, simple shape that is visually pleasing in many
settings." One-piece foam rubber cushion, upholstered in black leather, with polished
chrome base. This product is manufactured by Vitra and distributed by Herman Miller for
the Home.
