Billy Wilder, this beautifully sculpted chaise provides the perfect
respite for a quick snooze. No casting couch, it's just 17 1/2 inches
wide, with six foam cushions atop the gently sloping frame and two loose
cushions for additional support under the neck, back, or legs. With its
compact size, it fits well in a study or den or even the hallway between
them. Wilder planted the seed for the chaise's development in 1955,
when he mentioned to Charles and Ray that he had discovered a suitable
spot for a short, restorative afternoon nap: a foot-wide plank slung
between two sawhorses in a Nova Scotia lighthouse, where Wilder was
filming The Spirit of St. Louis. Remembering that story later, the Eameses
went to work on the chaise, introduced in 1968 and produced by Herman
Miller ever since.
Six 2-inch-thick foam cushions with leather upholstery in any of twelve
colors supported by a fabric sling. Nylon glides. Frame and base finish
are eggplant. Two loose upholstered cushions included.
