eames® dining chair metal (DCM)
Designed by Charles and Ray Eames

In the early 1940s, when Charles Eames was working on MGM set designs, he would return to the small apartment where he and his wife, Ray-using thin sheets of wood veneer and bicycle pumps as compressors-were experimenting with wood-molding techniques that would have profound effects on the world of design. Their discoveries led to a commission from the U.S. Navy in 1942 to develop molded plywood splints, stretchers, and glider shells, the precursors of many revered designs-including this plywood side chair. Designed to fit the contours of the human body, it's comfortable, practical, and lightweight. Boldly innovative when it was introduced in 1946, this chair was immediately acclaimed, and Herman Miller has been offering it ever since.

Natural face veneers and maple inner plies. Polished chrome-plated 4-leg base with self-leveling nylon glides. Ebony and Natural Cherry options are stain on maple veneer; inner plies are not as visible.

New Colors in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Charles Eames' birth. Designers Charles and Ray Eames established their long and legendary relationship with Herman Miller in 1946 with the boldly original molded plywood dining and lounge chairs. Since then, the aesthetic integrity, enduring charm, and comfort of the chairs have earned them recognition as the best of modern design. And to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of Charles Eames' birth, the chairs are now available in richly grained birch veneer, like the original. A series of new colors refreshes the palette and recalls the times when the chairs were introduced.

Finish choices. The chairs are offered with birch veneer in eight new finish colors (red, green, orange, black, light blue, white, and yellow); these stains allow the wood's natural characteristics to show through.
