panton living tower Designed by Verner Panton, 1969
The 1960s provided the ideal breeding ground for innovative and
experimental design. A profound change in lifestyle, heralding a departure
from the traditional way of living and new materials and manufacturing
processes inspired designers to come up with unconventional solutions. In
this context, "living spaces" became one of the hot issues of
1960's design. One of the most prolific proponents of this movement
was Verner Panton, who was continually striving to "look for and
reveal new ideas and new ways of living". Following the maxim of
"more comfort, increased eventfulness and more color" he
developed many interesting and original ideas, one of which was his notion
of "the conquest of air space" which he began as early as 1963
with his ceiling suspended Flying Chairs.
The Living Tower is a perfect manifestation of his idea that the
three-dimensionality of space shoule be used to maximum effect. An
amorphous two-part furniture-sculpture, the Living Tower can be used on
four levels and excels in two areas: it is extremely comfortable and acts
as a catalyst for communication. It is one of the most complete and
well-developed projects among Panton's many experimental furniture
designs.
